Similan Islands, The Jewel Of The Andaman

SIMILAN ISLANDS

The Similan Islands are not only the jewel in the Andaman ocean but a jewel in the oceans of the blue planet we call Earth. These islands lie 65 kilometers off the west coast of Thailand. This is just 85 km north west of the tourist hub ofPhuket Thailand. This island chain consist of nine islands in the Similanarchipelago which are just pin pricks in any map but with such stunning beauty that it will leave you wanting to return year after year. The Similan national park consists of the nine islands plus two more islands that stand alone to the north of the main group. The eleven islands are Koh Bangu, Koh Bon, Koh Ha, Koh Hin Pousar, Koh Huyong, Koh Meang, Koh Payan, Koh Payang, Koh Payu and Koh Similan. In total they cover 140 square kilometers with the largest being Koh Similan. Koh being the Thai word for island.

The islands themselves are on the whole uninhabited with a few tents and cabins available for an overnight stay during the season. The low lying islands are covered in a mix of thick jungle, white sandy beaches and large boulders. Ironwood and gum trees are among the larger trees, while jackfruit, rattan and bamboo form part of the denser undergrowth. The islands are home to crab-eating monkeys, dusky langurs, squirrels, bats, lizards and a good variety of birds (though the monkeys are shy and rarely seen by the casual observer).

But the most striking feature of these islands, at first glance, are the huge boulders that litter the western and southern shores on several of the islands. Another highlight, as the visitor soon discovers, are the white coral-sand beaches, splendidly picturesque and often deserted.

All eleven islands are surrounded by crystal blue tropical bays and lagoons. The clear warm water makes these islands a snorkeling and scuba diving dream. The conditions for coral growth are ideal, with a minimum prevailing sea temperature of about 28oC and exceptionally clear waters. More than 200 species of hard coral alone have so far been identified in this area, while these islands have the greatest profusion of reef fish in Thai waters. These are not only the best islands in Thailand but in the world.

DIVING THE SIMILAN ISLANDS

For scuba diving then by far the best way is to join one of the Liveaboard boats that tour these islands during the season which runs from 15th October till the 15th of May each year. This way you can travel from island to island diving as you go and still being able to stay in a comfortable air conditioned cabin with en-suit toilet and showers. The Liveaboard boats these days are a far cry for what many think of or experienced years ago. The boats in the Similans are all trying to be better than the others. This means that all the boats now have great chefs turning out better food on these dive boats than many smaller hotels and guest houses. Some boats are turning out four meals a day with snacks in-between. They all have almost unlimited supply of soft drinks all well chilled and of course when on a boat cruising in the tropic a nice sun deck too.

To join these trips is very simple. Just pop into any dive shop phuket that have gathered in this ideal location and there are trip leaving every day from Phuket. The best way to join these trips is to look for a well establish dive center specializing in scuba diving phuket with many years experience on the island as they will offer you several options both in length and quality of boat for you to choose from. The average price of a good mid range trip is fifteen to twenty thousand Thai baht for a three day cruise. This price will normally include the transfers from your hotel in Phuket, all your dive equipment and being a national park there is an entrance fee too. These are normally all included but do check these things when booking to avoid any unexpected fees. Some dive centers do offer "cheap trips" but then they add on all the extras so be aware of this and try to book a trip where everything is included as this will rule out any issues later. On Phuket diving shops are in every town. That is why a bit of research is best as the long established shops are the best as the newer shops tend to have to try marketing tricks to get the customers  as diving phuket is many people dream so new shops tend to come and go which is why the best diving is done with the older well establish dive centers as they have so many returning customers they dont need tricks to bring in customers just plain simple great service.

The Similan island liveaboards which are two or three day trips which take you to the eleven islands in the Similan national park including Koh Bon. The nine islands in the Similans islands are known for their clear waters with 40 meter or more viability being the norm rather than the exception. Here you will find both Black and white tip reef sharks, Hawksbill turtles as this is a turtle breeding ground too. Recent years have seen the rise in new visitors too like the guitar shark, Minke and pilot whales too. Koh Bon is the most northern island in the group and is a location where people go to see both the reef and giant Oceanic Manta Ray. When in Phuket Thailand then there is no better place on earth to visit than the Similan islands.

I had contacted Thailand Divers through Facebook prior to our holiday & they were really helpful! They gave me all the info I needed as a first time diver & were really easy to talk to! My girlfriend & I chose to do 3 dives at Phi Phi & when we arrived at the pier we were instantly greeted by our amazing instuctor Mike. He took us to the boat where we had a short briefing about discover scuba (as i said, we were first time divers) before getting some food before our first dive. Once we were in the water & learning all the basic techniques & skills that we needed to know. My Girlfriend was unable to do the skills at first & began freaking out saying she couldn’t do it, but Mike reassured her that she could. He took the extra time needed making sure she was comfortable in the water & even if we didn’t have as much time to actually dive down on our first dive, it didn’t matter. What mattered was the fact that Mike stayed patient with us the whole time while we were learning the skills & let us learn at our own pace so that we could enjoy the process of it all. Once we got to our second dive we were much more confident & spent most of the dive under water getting down to our 12 meter limit. I cant put it into words how amazing & serene it is watching all the fish, turtles, & other marine life just swimming & watching how they live under there. Its really something you have to experience for yourself. Overall we had an amazing day & seen so much marine life, we seen 3 turtles, 2 black tip reef sharks, an eel & a huge variety of fish! Wish we could do it again already! highly recommend this company to everyone!! Thanks again for the amazing day guys!!

Diving in Phuket ALL Year Round.

Diving in Phuket ALL Year Round

The best things about diving in Phuket is unlike other places in Asia we dive here all year round. We have dive sites for all 365 days a year. We have great reef diving only yards from the protection of islands so the water is calm, flat with minimal current from what ever direction the weather comes from. Also Phuket can get the Southern monsoon or the Northern monsoon or both or Neither. We can have blue sky and flat water during June, July and August when all around us is rain. Here on Phuket as we have a small mountain range too the clouds get caught on the island and out on the ocean its again blue sky and sun. We do have our share of storms too during the Monsoon season too but they are short and sharp and come out of nowhere and go just as fast.

Hawksbill turtle in the Similan national park          Phuket has some of the best diving in S.E Asia. From Whale Sharks and Manta rays to Dolphins, Turtles, Leopard sharks Black and White tip reef sharks. The is so much macro too Many Nudi branchs, Sea horses, Sea Moths, Ribbon Eels, Frog Fish, shrimps, Ornate Ghost pipe fish, Anemone crabs, Mantis shrimps and Harliquin shrimps. The lists are endless.

Ribbon Eel in the Similan Islands
Thailand  Divers has some of the best and most knowledgable instructors on the island of Phuket and will show you all there is to see no matter what the conditions. They dive the waters for many years all year round. They dont run away in the "off" season so they have the most up to date information on the conditions, and whats going on on all the dive sites around the island. They have no "office" staff as everyone on the team is a qualified Dive instructor or higher and they ALL know every dive site inside out. They can offer you the best advice on where to dive on a certain day to get the best dives based on the current conditions.

Before going to Phuket contact us to get all the most up to date information on the diving, Padi Courses in Phuket, Snorkeling trips in Phuket and many other tours on Phuket too. But above all enjoy your trip to sunny #Phuket.

Customers who have passed a diving course.
congratulations to Lisa Austin for passing her final day of the open water course

This is a great way to try scuba diving for the first time!

If you've never tried scuba diving before, or want to find out if you like scuba diving before starting the PADI certification course, then the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) programme is for you.

You will be introduced to the amazing underwater world of Phuket which is home to some of the best coral reefs in the world.

We conduct the Discover Scuba Diving day trip all year round, as we are lucky to have a constant water temperture between 27 - 28 Degrees Celsius (80 -82 Fahrenheit) and fantastic underwater visability.

There's NO classroom work involved, NO swimming pool tests and definitely NO exams- your PADI  Instructor will give you a short briefing on the boat on the way to the Phuket dive sites and cover important safety aspects, how the equipment works and what to expect to see under the water during the day on the coral reefs. All you need to do is relax and have fun!

Here at Thailand Divers we make safety and fun for you our main priorities, so with the Discover Scuba Diving programme the maximum group size will be four divers with one PADI instructor.

If you would like a more personal experience then we offer a Private Instructor option for the day - where it would be just yourself and one PADI instructor on all dives.

We come and collect you from your hotel lobby in the morning and retrun you back in the late afternoon - everything you will need for the day is provided. All you need to bring along is a towel and swimwear.

Phi Phi Snorkelling

Phi Phi Snorkelling

You've probably heard of Phi Phi Islands from the movies, so this day trip is your opportunity to see these stunning islands for yourself and snorkel in the amazing crystal-clear waters around them!

What you see underwater is truly a work of art: the sheer diversity and quantity of fish and marine-life is breath-taking. The scene is set against a canvas of fine, powdery-white sand with the different colours of the coral  accentuated by the sunlight from above. Looking down, as you float above the coral, you will be captivated by the sheer variety in size and colour of the fish as they ebb and flow around the coral.

This trip is from a purpose-built diving and snorkelling boat- not a speed boat, so there is plenty of space onboard to stretch your legs and move around. There is a large, shaded seating area on the top deck with panaromic views; two toilets and showers on the lower deck plus a large air-conditioned saloon area if you want to escape the sun.

Records Broken as Dive Against Debris Event

Records Broken as Dive Against Debris Event in Phuket Exceeds all Expectations

September's Debris Month of Action saw thousands of divers across the world gear up and dive in to remove dangerous rubbish, nets, fishing traps and household waste from our ocean. From the islands of Fiji up to the waters of Devon, UK and all the way back to Brazil and South America, divers everywhere rallied together for one month of action to draw attention to our ocean’s silent killer: marine debris.

Tony Andrews
, PADI Regional Manager On the island of Phuket, Thailand new records in the fight against debris were smashed on 30th September. Over 650 divers and beach cleaners took part in the biggest Dive Against Debris event in the world with PADI Dive Centres working together as part of a recently formed group called Go Eco Phuket. They removed around 15 tonnes of rubbish including a massive discarded fishing net that weighed in at 4.5 tonnes.

Created to support Project AWARE actions and kick start local environmental initiatives, dive centres around Phuket pulled together to establish its first major Dive Against Debris event. With support from PADI Asia Pacific and led by PADI Regional Manager and Project AWARE Ambassador, Tony Andrews, the event gained incredible support from local businesses, the Royal Navy, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Marine Fisheries, Marine Police, Phuket Marine Biological Centre, Army and the Thai Aor- Ba-Jor.

" This large scale action to protect our reefs has been mind blowing. We’ve exceeded all our expectations. We’ve worked together as a community: diving businesses, local businesses and government authorities.
