Yesterday a Cuvier's Beaked Whale otherwise known as a
Goose-Beaked Whale washed up ashore in Phuket. Luckily the whale was uninjured
and in good health.
After a few hours the
whale was pulled through the strong surf and too deeper water where it dove back
to the safer deeper water.
The whale was around 3
meters long – about half the size they grow to which is around 5- 7 meters.
These whales are
rarely seen in shallow waters as they predominately live in waters 1,000m or
more. They are the deepest diving mammal – with depths reached up to 2,992
meters / 9,816 feet and astonishing breath holding as they have been reordered
diving for over 2 hours making this the longest dives documented for any
mammal.
There is an estimated
100,000 + Beaked whales in the world.
Lets hope that this
one does not wash up again and stays down in the safer deep waters.
